A extended journey through Australia was terminated following the death of an elderly female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a distant island.

The passenger had been trekking on the tropical location with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the group for a pause. The vessel departed without her and returned after some time after the ship staff realised the passenger was not present.

An extensive rescue mission located her person the next day.

Officials are examining the incident, together with police and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that travelers and personnel on the vessel were informed that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and prior engine troubles".

In a statement, he further stated that travelers would be given a full refund, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the travel back of the passengers via private aircraft".

Authorities also published an updated statement, and said they had "provided a order to the Commander" preventing any further travelers from boarding the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the liner in the port city upon its arrival.

Timeline of Incidents

The vessel originally sailed from the coastal city on October 24th, and was merely two days into the voyage at the moment of the elderly woman's passing. The remote island was the first stop on the journey.

Passengers on the ship - who generally pay large sums of currency to join the voyage - were ferried there for a day trip with the option of trekking or snorkelling.

Family Reaction

The child of the deceased woman said that her family was "shocked and grieved that the liner left the island after an organised tour without my parent".

In her statement, she characterized her mum as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a member of a hiking group.

"According to scant details we have been informed, it seems that there was a lapse of care and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she desired the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have performed that might have preserved Mum's being".

"According to reports from the authorities that it was a exceptionally warm afternoon, and she became unwell on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"She was asked her to return, unescorted. Then the boat sailed away, reportedly without performing a roll call.

Company Response

In a statement, the CEO confirmed that the operator was "collaborating extensively with investigators to support their examination".

He said that the organization was "extremely apologetic that this has transpired" and had extended its total backing to the relatives.

The ship serves up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty staff, according to official details. It was specially constructed to access isolated locations of Australia's coastline and is equipped with "tenders" - small boats used to ferry travelers on shore trips.

Incidents such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have protocols to track which passengers are boarding or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship really isn't an possibility," one expert commented.

Vessel operators consider these procedures with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such occurrences from taking place," the specialist further stated.
